William "Bill" Smith Obituary

William R. (Bill) Smith of Chariton passed away peacefully with his family at his side, June 10, 2026 at the VA Hospital in Des Moines, Iowa.

Bill was born December 20, 1946 to James and Agnes Smith in Melrose, Iowa. Bill grew up in Melrose, attending school in Melrose, Albia, and he graduated from Beardstown, Illinois in 1965.

Bill was called to serve his country April 1966. Bill served 2 years, with 1 tour in Vietnam.

Bill worked for the Burlington Northern Railroad and retired after 40 years. Bill was also a member of the American Legion.

Bill was a loyal fan of the Iowa Hawkeyes, Chicago Cubs, and Chicago Bears attending games with his son, Ryne. He enjoyed playing cards with family and friends.

Bill is survived by his son Ryne, sisters Marilyn (Dan) Murphy, Dorie Grove, Linda (Bill) Hannam, and Jeri (Rich) Keller and many nieces, nephews, family, and friends.

He was preceded in death by his parents James and Agnes Smith, sisters and brothers-in-law Helen Marie and Art McDonough, Phyllis and Jack Coleman, Ellie and Frank Sumner, Kay and Larry Shelton, Sheila and Dick Barrows, Ron Grove, brothers and sisters-in-law Jack and Lucille Smith, and Joe and Karen Smith, and several nieces and nephews.

The family would like to thank all the doctors, nurses, and all staff for the wonderful care Bill was given at the VA Hospital.
