Timothy Howell Obituary

Timothy Bryan Howell, age 60, passed away peacefully on Sunday, October 17, 2021, at the Mayo Clinic in Rochester, MN. He was born September 27, 1961, in Creston, IA to William “Bill” and Joyce Howell. Tim grew up in Afton, Centerville, Humeston, and Chariton, IA. He was a 1980 graduate of Morman Trail High School. After high school, he worked as a bartender and daytime shift manager for many years at the Sportsman’s Bar in Chariton, IA.  The bar was owned by his parents, but Tim was instrumental in keeping it organized, taking care of inventory, and especially loved keeping the jukebox filled with the patrons’ favorite songs.

In middle school, one of his favorite things to do in the summer was to walk from his home on the farm into Humeston to swim. Tim’s hobbies were reading and spending time with family. He was especially proud of his twin nieces Taylor and Jordan and loved to spoil them when they came to visit. During his stay at Chariton Specialty Care he always enjoyed spending Thursday afternoons with his Aunt Awanda Howell playing scrabble.  Frequent visits from his Aunt Karen and Uncle Ken Chronister were equally enjoyed. This past June & July he loved visiting his Uncle Jerry and watching old western movies while Jerry was staying at Chariton Specialty also.

All the staff at Chariton Specialty Care are so sad to learn of Tim’s passing. While he generally was pretty quiet, he always had a “Hi, how are you” for everyone and he made sure to make stops on his daily walks to check in on everyone. He was a great listener and always gave great conversation. One of his pleasures was watching the birds outside his window and pet visits. He was also the first to let us know when a TV channel wasn’t working properly. His bellowing laughter through the hall while watching his favorite TV shows and kind heart will be greatly missed by all of us here at Chariton Specialty Care.

Tim was preceded in death by brother William “Mike” Howell, parents William “Bill” and Joyce Howell, grandparents William and Sophronia Howell, and Floyd and Averil Surbaugh.

He is survived by brothers Jeffrey Howell of Phoenix, AZ, Pat (Betty) Howell of Sugar Land, TX, his nieces Jordan Lenae and Taylor Lillian Howell (Pat and Betty), Lindsay Westfall and nephew Travis (Jessica) Neer.  Additionally, he is survived by many Aunts, Uncles, Cousins and Friends.
