Myrtle Marie (Shanks) Briner Obituary
Myrtle Marie (Shanks) Briner, 91, passed away peacefully with her daughter by her
side on Thursday, March 12, 2026, at the Wayne County Hospital. Myrtle was born on
January 25, 1935, in Chariton, Iowa to Ralph and Opal (Anderson) Shanks. She grew
up on the family farm near Derby and graduated from Derby High School with class of
1952. She worked in Des Moines after graduating.
On February 6,1954, she was united in marriage to William Briner. To this union five
children born, William “Billy”, Tom, Nancy, Linda and Connie. They bought a farm north
of Cambria where they raised their children. After the loss of her husband, Myrtle
worked at The Double Dip, for her sister in law and good friend, Annie Shanks.
Eventually she got a job at Hy-Vee, working at Regal video, moving to the billing
department. She retired in 2020 at the age of 85 due to the Covid outbreak.
She enjoyed bowling, going to Bluegrass jams, dancing and singing. She loved to travel
and went on several cruises, grew wonderful gardens and in the fall, she enjoyed
picking up nuts and knitting. Her family will always remember the fun-loving memories
they were blessed with.
Left to mourn Myrtle passing are her children, Tom (Vienna) Briner of Chariton, Nancy
(Brian) Flinn of Slater, Linda( Doug) Briner-Klee of Mendon, MO, Connie (Matt) Goben
of Lucas, four grandchildren, eight great-grandchildren, nine great-great-grandchildren,
lots of nieces and nephews. And her sister, Juanita Owens of Weldon.
She was preceded in death by her parents Ralph and Opal (Anderson) Shanks,
husband William K., son William N. Briner, granddaughter Rhiannon Lutts, great-grand
son Tommy Lewis, brothers Walter, Ralph, Bob, Ed, John, Donnie, Gail, Larry, and
Freddie Shanks.
