James "Sugar" R Johnston Obituary
James Robert Johnston (Sugar), ager 85, of Chariton, Iowa. Passed away on February 1, 2024 at the Lucas County Health Center.
Jim was born on October 12, 1938, to Lee and Marie Johnston of Chariton. He graduated from Chariton High School with the class of 1956. After graduating he served in the United States Army, before coming back in Chariton. On July 17, 1964, Jim married Davadean Hartley, and they were married for 58 years. They lived in Des Moines, IA and Omaha, NE before settling back in Chariton. Jim loved sports and could recite every score and date, and he would remember the birthday of everyone he met. He was very sentimental and would happily give a history lesson on Chariton or his favorite sports players to anyone who asked. He was a proud father, grandfather and great grandfather.
Jim is survived by his sister Jane (Raymond) Huff of Chariton, IA, son David Johnston (Kristine of Hudson, WI, stepdaughter Janis Weed (Mike) of Corpus Christi, TX, Grandchildren Cody (Heather) Darrah of Kirksville, Mo, Derek (Erin) Johnson of Ellsworth, WI, Marissa Johnston of Hudson, WI and Marly Johnston of La Crosse, WI, and 3 great-grandchildren, Sadie, Sheamus and Sawyer Darrah of Kirksville, MO.
Jim was preceded in death by his parents, his wife Davadean and his stepson Bob Darrah.
Services will be held 11:00 a.m., Monday, February 12, 2024 at Fielding Funeral Home in Chariton, Iowa. Visitation will be held one hour prior to services at the funeral home. Interment will be held following the services at the Calvary Cemetery in Chariton. On line condolences may be left at www.fieldingfuneralhome.com.
