Ida Correne Kunch, 85, passed away at 3:00 AM on Saturday, January 27, 2024 at the Chariton Hospital. Ida was born August 9, 1938 in Corydon to Evelyn (Holmes) and Joseph Nichols. Ida attended school in Chariton in the 1940's and 50's, attained her GED in the early 1990's, and attended Indian Hills Community College.
Ida dated Richard (Dick) Kunch in high school and they were married August 18, 1956, at the Justice of the Peace in Russell, Iowa. They lived in Chariton, Iowa; San Diego, California; and spent 3 years in Guam while Dick was in the service. They then moved back to Iowa, residing in LeClaire for a period of time before settling back in the Chariton area.
Dick and Ida had two children, Crystal Correne born January 17, 1958, and Anthony Dean born November 7, 1959. The couple had 3 grandchildren.
Ida worked at garment factories in Davenport, Chariton, and Corydon. She retired from factory work in 1990 and subsequently obtained her GED and attended Indian Hills Community College. One of her instructors there told her she was not cut out to work with computers so Ida instead filled her time with independent work at home.
Ida loved to play cribbage, but since Dick always kept score she seldom won. She was also an avid reader and enjoyed word search puzzles. Ida, wearing a signature ball hat adorned with many decorative pins, was often by Dick’s side at any auction within driving distance, and she leaves behind many cookbooks, quilts, and TV lamps as a result. Ida had a great love of animals and took pleasure in watching the birds and deer that were regular visitors to the many feeders she and Dick maintained at their home in the country south of Chariton. Due to health concerns, the couple had recently moved into Chariton.
Ida was preceded in death by her parents; both children; two sisters, Wanda Engel and Sharon Hauger; two brothers, Joe and Curtis Nichols; brothers-in-law Don Kunch and Bert Lockard; sisters-in-law Donna Sutton and Ruth Ann Kunch. Brother-in-law Dwain Kunch passed away the day after Ida.
Ida is survived by her loving husband; her three grandchildren; sisters-in-law Diane (Buck) Irving, Kathy Lockard, and Glenda Kunch; brothers-in-law Robert (Barb) Kunch and Ron Sutton; and many extended family members that will miss her engaging smile. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be directed to the Humane Society in Ida’s name.
Ida’s body was donated to the Science Center at the University of Iowa and will be cremated at a later date.
