Donald Richard Offenburger, age 84 of Chariton, Iowa. The son of Neil Offenburger and Dollie Vivian (Griffin) Offenburger was born January 10, 1937 at Chariton, Iowa.
Don was raised in the rural Williamson area, attending Williamson School and graduated from Chariton High School 1955.
At age 14, Don started working at Chariton Supply Store (later becoming Hy-Vee) had to walk to work or hitch hike from the Williamson area to get to work. He then started working part time in his senior year of high school at Johnson Machine Works. His time at Johnson Machine Works turned into a career of 50 years.
Don married his high school sweetheart, Altha Exley, in December 1955. They celebrated their 65th anniversary this last December. They were blessed with two sons, Steve and Joe.
Don was a member of the Chariton Volunteer fire department for 18 Years. He was also active with the boy scout, little league baseball and Chariton Valley gun Club. Don loved old cars, guns, motorcycles, books and mostly loved spending time with his grandchildren, Kurt and Laura and great-grandson, Kolt. He attended all of his grandkid’s sports and school activities. Don enjoyed Sunday dinners with his family.
Preceding him in death were his parents, Neil and Vivian Offenburger and Emma Rose Offenburger. Survivors include his wife, Altha Offenburger, children Steve and Joe Offenburger, brothers, Larry (Pat) Offenburger, Ronnie (Carol) Offenburger, grandchildren, Kurt (Amanda) Offenburger, Laura (Mitch) Hutchins, great-grandson, Kolt Offenburger and many nieces, nephews and cousins.
Funeral services will be held 11:00 a.m., Monday, February 1, 2021. Visitation will be one hour prior to services. The services will be held at Fielding Funeral Home in Chariton, Iowa. Intermet will be held in the Chariton Cemetery following the services.
