Stephen Mark Laing

Stephen Mark Laing, 68, passed peacefully on Tuesday June 25th.  Stephen was born on February 2, 1951 in Chariton Iowa, to Mahlon and Carol Laing.  He graduated from Chariton High School in 1969.  He attended Junior College in Creston, and Clarinda Iowa.On November 21st, 1970, he was united in marriage to Kathryn J Curtis. Together they have three children, Dennis (Carla) of Rogers Arkansas, Shelley (Scott) of Urbandale, and Curtis (Shelly) of Indianola.  Steve and Kathy also have a special Italian family, Barbara, Nando, Beatrice Reali of Sarrono, Italy. Steve and Kathy lived throughout Hy-Vee land, primarily in Cherokee and Chariton.  Steve worked for Hy-Vee Inc. in various positions over 37years.  Over the past 6 years Steve has served his community as a Lucas County Supervisor. Steve enjoyed various activities mostly fishing, motorcycle riding, camping and woodworking. He was a member of the Masonic Lodge and Za-Ga-Zig Shriner. He was truly himself when he was spending time with family, friends and serving his community. Steve is proceeded in death by his parents.  He is survived by his wife, Kathy; three children, Dennis (Carla), Shelley (Scott), Curtis (Shelly); and three grandchildren, Brooke & John Laing (Dennis), McKenna Finneman (Shelley).  He is also survived by three sisters (2 brother in laws), 1 brother (1 sister in law), and many nieces and nephews.  In lieu of flowers, memorials may be direct to Chariton Senior Center, Courthouse Clock Restoration Fund, and First United Methodist Church. Services will be held 2pm Friday June 28th, 2019 at the Fielding Funeral Home located in Chariton, Iowa with Pastor Dave Hobbs officiating.  Visitation will take place from noon- 2pm on Friday also.  Interment will be held in the Chariton Cemetery.  Bearers are Jim Arnold, Mike Arnold, Adam Curran, Eric Curran, Kyle Petersen (honorary), Brett Petersen, Chris Laing, Andrew Laing, Brenden Laing, and Daric Laing.
