Lucille Marie Chandler was born July 6, 1929 in her grandmother’s home at Oakley, Iowa to George William (Bud) and Elsie Mae (Nussbaum) Goben. She was born on her father’s birthday. She later had 2 brothers Kenneth and Robert (Bob). She attended Alma Clay Elementary School. At the end of 8^th grade the family moved to Oregon and she received her education in Roseburg and later Portland, Oregon. Her senior year the family lived in Amberg, Wisconsin where she graduated with the class of 1947. Her family moved back to Iowa that year and she got a job in Newton at the Maytag office staying during the week in Newton and returning home on the weekend. During this time she met Albert Ray Chandler. They were married January 29, 1950 at the Chariton Methodist Church. Albert and Lucille made their home first in a small 4 room house near Norwood where Albert was farming. Their daughter Carol Ann and son Larry Ray were born during this time. The little 4 room house was too small and Albert bought a larger home and farm to move into. That became the home they lived in for many years. Gary Lee was born soon after they moved.

     Lucille made a fine home and grew a large beautiful garden to provide food for this family: lots of strawberries, beans, peas, corn and other fine produce. She attended Church faithfully at the Norwood United Methodist Church where she and Albert became members. She taught Sunday School and Bible School often and saw to it that her children were raised knowing Jesus. She was a member of the Ladies Aid at her church, the Norwood Goodwill Club, and her neighborhood coffee group.  When Carol was in Norwood Otterettes’ 4-H club, Lucille served as leader for a time. She also followed Larry and Gary’s cross country meets. As the children moved out, Lucille found the time to get a job. She worked at Lucas Products, Places, and Job Corp. As her grandchildren grew and started participating in different activities, she enjoyed watching them. Cross country meets, basketball and baseball games, and marching band parades and competitions were very enjoyable for her. She even followed the Lenox Marching Band to Washington, DC to see the grandkids participate in the 4^th of July parade there. She found genealogy very fulfilling and was a part of the Lucas County Genealogical Society in Chariton. She took good care of Albert as he acquired cancer and then took care of her mother Elsie, after Albert’s passing in 1991. As Lucille began to show signs of dementia, she moved off the farm to Southgate. This was a hard transition because she loved the farm life. Later she moved to Homestead Assisted Living in Chariton and then to Homestead Assisted Living in Osceola in March of 2017. She passed away there on Dec. 7, 2017.

      Lucille was predeceased by her parents, Albert her husband of 40 years, son-in-law Franklin Rogers, and son Gary. Leaving those who will remember her fondly are her brothers, Kenneth (Pat) Goben of Vienna, Virginia, Bob Goben of Lucas, daughter Carol Rogers of Lenox, and son Larry (Myra) Chandler of DeWitt, daughter-in-law Sherri Chandler of Lucas, as well as 9 grandchildren and 30 great grandchildren.
