Fred Housman Obituary

Freddie Lynn Housman, resident of Norwalk, Iowa, formerly of Chariton, Iowa, passed away on February 5, 2024 at the age of 69 years old.

Fred started working at Hy-Vee in 1972. He married his high school sweetheart, Sue Leonard in 1978. To this union, two sons were born, Joseph Michael and John Eric. Fred was a tireless and loyal worker. He had a long successful career with Hy-Vee climbing the corporate ladder. From warehouse to dispatch, final retiring in 2009 as Vice President of Distribution. He had incredible impact on many in his years with the company. Fred lost his wife Sue in 2000 after a long battle with cancer. He was very close to his in-laws, Jack and Juanita Leonard and considered them second parents. He later married Pam Chipp and after retiring from Hy-Vee, worked part time at Scheels. He deeply enjoyed and loved people and work.

Fred loved his time with Sue and raising their sons. He had fond memories of going to Minnesota on fishing trips, and the boys sporting events, he was a dedicated family man and father. He and Joey loved golfing and car races. Fred suffered a devastating loss of Joey in 2018. He and youngest son John also enjoyed golf and going to live concerts. He was a heavy metal and hard rock fanatic. He adored his grandsons, Evan Scott and Simon Leonard, many great times together, golfing, trampoline jumping, swimming at hotels, go carts, movies and going out to eat. Fred always treasured memories of the family farm north of Chariton.

Fred was so many things to his beloved family. A voice of reason and comfort, care giver, mediator, his Dad’s weekend farm hand, father and grandpa, always there for his family, and always far side jokes to you smile and laugh. The song is ended but the melody will remain in our hearts till we meet again. Sweet peace, dearest brother, husband, father, grandfather, uncle, and friend.
