Marvin L. Griswold

July 20, 1927 ~ February 8, 2017 (age 89) 89 Years Old


Marvin L. Griswold, 89, passed away peacefully on February 8, 2017 with his family at his side at the Veterans Hospital in Des Moines, Iowa. He was the oldest child of Carl Raymond Griswold and Ruth Izetta (Noble) Griswold.  He was born July 20,1927 on his grandparents’ farm south of Afton, Iowa.

Marvin attended country schools until moving to Arispe, Iowa where he attended fifth through eleventh grade. Later moving to Creston for his Senior year of schooling. He drove a truck for his father the summer before his senior year.

Marvin was drafted in the United States Army in April of 1946, stationed at Camp Polk. LA, while there he was a typist for the payroll department. Later he was sent to Fort Dix, N.J for basic training and then shipped overseas to Japan in October of 1946. He served in the motor pool while there during World War II and discharged in 1947.

Marvin returned home to Creston after the Army and attended Creston High School completing his Senior year and graduating in January of 1948.  He started dating Betty Glade in September of 1947 and were married on June 5,1949.  They had three children Marlys (Jerry) Napper of New Jersey, Beverly (Dennis) Martin of Chariton and Raymond Griswold of Knoxville, Iowa. 

Marvin went to Bible college in 1950 for 2 ½ years, then returning to Creston. In June of 1957 he took a job as a wholesale route salesman for Anderson-Erickson Dairy and moved to Chariton. He retired after 27 years with the company in July of 1984. After retirement, he took a job with Hy-Vee Inc. as a part-time security officer until 1992.

Marvin accepted Jesus Christ as his savior in April of 1946. He was an active member of Grace Baptist Church for over 50 years. He also did pulpit supply in several churches. He enjoyed his family, hunting, fishing, traveling, camping and building. He remodeled several houses including his own.  He also enjoyed making things out of wood including tables, curio cabinets, clocks and many other beautiful pieces.   

Marvin was preceded in death by his parents Carl and Ruth, brother Dale, sister Donna and step-sister Karen Donner. Left to cherish his memories are wife Betty, daughters Marlys (Jerry) Napper and Beverly (Dennis) Martin and son Raymond Griswold. Sisters Marjorie Erickson, Charlotte Werth and brother John (Ann) Griswold. Along with 7 grandchildren, 16 great-grandchildren, nieces, nephews and cousins. He will be missed greatly.
