Marjorie G Rogers

Marjorie Genevieve (Hoffman) Rogers, 95, passed away peacefully on May 22, 2017 at Presence Covenant Medical Center in Champaign, IL. She was born on her Golden Birthday 2/22/22 to Clarence Andrew and Gertrude Florence (Frueh) Hoffman in Warren County, IA. Marjorie attended country schools and graduated from Lucas High School in 1940. She played short stop for the Lucas Merchants ladies softball team for 3 years.

Marjorie married her high school sweetheart Charles Rogers on December 10,1942 in Waco, Texas. During WWII, Marjorie joined the Women's Army Corp in which she served three years. She was honorably discharged in 1945. Marjorie was a 66-year member of the American Legion. She was selected for the WWII Veteran's "Honor Flight" to Washington, DC.

After the war, Marjorie and Charles returned to Lucas, IA where they owned and operated Rogers Hardware & Lumber. The couple had two children, Charles Jr. (Chuck) and Sharon. In 1963, Marjorie was appointed Postmaster at the Lucas Post Office by President John F. Kennedy. She retired in 1990 with 32 years of postal experience.

Throughout the years, Marjorie remained active in the Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Chariton. She was known as the "Pie Lady" because she coordinated such a variety of beautiful pies on the dessert tables for many special church dinners, funerals, fund raisers and community events. She was a charter member of the John L Lewis Museum Board of Directors serving as secretary and historian. Since 1994, she worked as a surgical hostess at the Lucas County Hospital and volunteered at the Chariton Nursing and Rehab Center.

Marjorie was preceded in death by her parents, husband Charles, brothers Dewayne (Darlene) Hoffman, Floyd (Corda) Hoffman, Clarence Jr. (Janice) Hoffman and sisters Wilma (Lloyd) Goben, Alice (Norval) Shupe and brother-in-law Marvin Boyd.

Marjorie is survived by her son Charles (Chuck) Rogers of Durant, IA; daughter Sharon (Richard) Petefish of Champaign, IL, granddaughter Jennifer (Nicholas) Wherley, great- grandchildren Grace and Jackson Wherley of Tolono, IL, sister Mary Louise Boyd of Chariton, IA and many nieces, nephews, cousins and a host of good friends.
